Teaching Philosophy

After many years of teaching in large classes at other universities, I am very excited to be teaching in the small classes that are characteristic of Barry. It enables me to know each student, to understand what they are hoping to learn from the class, and to provide that information in a format that facilitates their learning.

Dr. Diener received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College; she also has an MBA and a doctoral degree from Harvard Business School. She has worked in industry, in marketing, in new product development, and in advertising. In academia, she has taught at Case Western Reserve University, Old Dominion University (where she served as Dean of Business) and at the University of Massachusetts in Boston (where she served as Provost, and as Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Economic Development). She also worked in state government as a Cabinet Secretary to the Governor of Virginia, where she was responsible for economic development and environmental protection. Finally, she has been president of a trade association for the environmental technology industry in the New England region of the United States. She was Professor of Marketing and Management in the College of Management at the University of Massachusetts in Boston until her retirement in the summer of 2002. She also spent a semester as a Fulbright professor, lecturing on marketing and also on environmental management, at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management, in Beijing, China. Since then she has been active in the development of teaching materials on environmental management issues in Chinese companies.
