Teaching Philosophy

My belief that education is an ongoing process means that the course content needs to be relevant and that the skills learned need to be transferable to other disciplines as well. I try to help students find a method of studying that will enable them to be successful not just in a single course, but in the long run to be proficient in updating their knowledge and competencies.

Dr. Wiggenhorn graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics. Initially, she worked for the Bell System in several capacities including Business Information Systems and Long Range Forecasting. After receiving her M.A. in Economics from Florida Atlantic University, she taught a variety of economics courses including Mathematical Economics, Money and Banking, and Intermediate Microeconomics. Joan then taught at Broward Community College as an Associate Professor teaching Economics and Business courses. She was there for twelve years and received an MBA and then her Ph.D. in Finance from Florida Atlantic University in December 2003.

Her areas of interest in teaching include international finance, financial institutions, investments, and corporate finance. Her research interests include: international, with papers both on born global firms and diversification through American Depository Receipts; initial public offerings and newly public firms; and acquisitions and mergers.
