BIOE 303 Human Genetics (3 s.h.)
Principles of heredity, including classical genetics, population genetics, cancer genetics and current genetic technology. Prerequisites: Biology 104 or equivalent; Biology 253 or 325; Chemistry 152 or 343, or permission of instructor.
BIOE 317 Laboratory Management Seminar ( 2 s.h.)
General introduction to laboratory management for the medical laboratory technologist; emphasis on theories, methods, and techniques used in management, with specific application to the laboratory.
BIOE 325 Microbiology (3s.h.)
Bacterial and viral classification, structure, physiology, genetics, pathogenicity and immunology; methods of cultivation, identification, and control of microorganisms. Prerequisites: Biology 104 or equivalent; Chemistry 152 or 343.
BIOE 330 Cell Biology ( 3 s.h.)
Biological processes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, with emphasis on the correlation between structure and function on the molecular level. Prerequisites: Biology 104 or equivalent; Pre- or Co-requisite: Chemistry 152 or 343.
BIOE 346 Parasitology (3 s.h.)
Morphology, taxonomy, identification, life history, host-parasite relationship, and control of protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites. Prerequisite: Biology 104 or equivalent.
BIOE 427 - 428 Biochemistry I, II (3 s.h., each)
Introduction to the fundamental aspects of biochemistry; emphasizes the relationship between structure and function of the major classes of macromolecules in living systems. Metabolic interrelationships and control mechanisms are discussed as well as the biochemical basis of human disease.
BIOE 445 Microtechnique (Lecture 2 s.h., Lab 2 s.h.)
Principles and theories of fixation and staining processes; methods of preparing animal tissues; laboratory and restoration. Prerequisites: Biology 104 and Biology 450L ( Requires special permission of instructor). (Special Fee)
BIOE 450 Histology (Lecture 2 s.h., Lab 2 s.h.)
Microscopic study of animal tissues, with the relationship between structure and function stressed. Prerequisites: Biology 104, Biology 220 or 225 or 230, or approval of Director. (Special Fee)
BIOE 455 Immunology (3 s.h.)
Major topics considered in this course are antibody formation, antigen-antibody interactions, biological effects of immunologic reactions, immunological specificity of normal diseased cells and tissue.
BIOE 475 Seminar (3 s.h.)
Presentation of reports, discussions, lectures and papers on selected topics in biology.
BIOE 480, 485 Clinical Experience – Medical Technology
Execution of chosen experimental training under the direction of selected faculty members at the clinical affiliate site. (Restricted to Medical Technology students.)
