Barry University’s collegiate traditions promote campus spirit, highlight our history and build community through social and academic mission-centered programs across the university. Join us for these signature events that promote pride in our institution and are beloved by students, faculty and staff
Barry has put in place "layers of protection" to guard against the spread of COVID-19 within our university community. Our institutional traditions, highlighted below, will incorporate physical distancing and remote participation in order to ensure a robust student life experience, both in-person and virtually.
New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation provides incoming undergraduate students with essential social and academic resources to support their transition to Barry University.
New Student Investiture

New Student Investiture is the signature welcoming ceremony with the university president that highlights the opening chapter of college life for entering students.
Mass of the Holy Spirit
September 8, 2021
The University community marks the beginning of the fall semester by celebrating the Mass of the Holy Spirit where members of all faith traditions are invited for blessings on the new academic year.

Activities during the first week of classes welcome all students with fun, interactive programs designed to maximize student opportunities to make lifelong friends.

The Mini Conference serves as an introduction to the values of the Barry Mission and Core Commitments. It is an all-day event associated with the Common Reader/Common Curriculum that will include presentations and discussions, guest speakers from local community-based agencies, film screening, service opportunities and many other integrated sessions.

Founders’ Week and Alumni Homecoming Weekend honors the spirit of our founders, the Adrian Dominican sisters and celebrates Barry University traditions. Through service, scholarly, and joyful events, we highlight the University’s faithfulness to our motto – Learn, Reflect, Serve and build connections that unite students, faculty, staff and alumni for generations to come.
Christmas Tree Lighting

This special tradition kicks off the Christmas season with music, food and fun activities. Meet Santa as you stroll through the International Village with holiday treats, elves and reindeer.
Barry University NUN RUN
January 29, 2022
All runners, walkers, and joggers are welcome!
The Nun Run 5K and 8K is open to all age groups and abilities. Families are encouraged to participate. The Nun Run 8K is ideal for high school athletes who want to practice a collegiate length. Results and standings will be monitored with real-time chip tracking technology from Split Second Timing.
This race will be CERTIFIED.
All Nun Run participants will receive a complimentary T-shirt, finisher medal, hydration drinks, snacks, and admission to Barry University’s FamFest after the race. The Nun Run 5K/8K honors the determined spirit of Barry University’s founders, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, so you’re encouraged to race with a nun's habit.
MLK Jr. Day of Service
January 15, 2022
Barry's MLK Day of Service addresses current social issues affecting Miami's communities of color, including youth development, public health, and environmental justice.
College Brides Walk
February 18, 2022
The College Brides Walk is a dating and domestic violence awareness campaign. Held annually at Barry University and in conjunction with many area colleges, high schools and community groups, it includes an opening session with speakers, a walk, educational workshops, and other activities throughout the month of February, including actions participants can take to help victims and reduce abuse.

Community Engagement Awards

The primary purpose of the Awards is to publicly recognize students, faculty, staff/administrators, departments, and community partners for their community engagement participation, contributions, and achievements.
Community Engagement Symposium
March 30, 2022 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The program will feature a morning workshop and an afternoon plenary session by a nationally recognized community engagement scholar-practitioner; a concurrent presentation session for faculty, staff, students, and community partners; and a poster session.
April 3-9, 2022
Earth Week celebrates Barry's commitment to "recognize the sacredness of the Earth" that includes programs and events that promote sustainability efforts on campus and in the local community.

This annual event provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to share with the Barry community their research findings in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math disciplines (S.T.E.M.), Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Mission And Student Engagement Awards

The ceremony provides the opportunity for the Division of Mission and Student Engagement to publicly recognize students who have pursued leadership and volunteering roles at the University. All award nominees are cordially invited to the Student Awards Banquet, during which award recipients will be announced and recognized. The university thanks all of the students in leadership roles who illustrate the University’s commitment to the community, as well as faculty, staff and administration members who have given of their time to help realize the Barry Mission.
