Summer Study in Fanjeaux

This summer, Barry University students, faculty, staff and administrators will join with others who study and work at Dominican colleges and universities in the United States for two weeks in the small village of Fanjeaux, in southwestern France. Their stay will end with four days in Paris. From May 26 – June 12, 2009, this group will learn about Dominican and medieval French history and tradition, spending mornings studying and afternoons on field trips.

Study and conversations will include the intellectual tradition of the Dominicans (e.g., aesthetics and theology) and discussion of justice and diversity issues. The seminar will offer participants the opportunity to explore implications of the Dominican tradition for Dominican colleges and universities today.

Sites in southern France that will be visited include places that hold special meaning to the Dominican Order’s early years. Proposed daily tours from Fanjeaux include Prouilhe, Toulouse, Carcassonne, Albi, Collioure (on the Mediterranean), Montségur, Grottes de Niaux (known for its prehistoric paintings), and Chateau de Puilaurens.

The seminar is organized for all Dominican Colleges and Universities by Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. Barry is offering limited scholarships to assist faculty, staff, and students wishing to attend the seminar.
