Barry University has one of only three programs certified by the American Montessori Program (which we have, and are certified by, one of three approved programs). Adjustments to the curriculum are regularly made to ensure that it stays modern and relevant.
Students in this program are interested in both the traditional Pre-K / Primary teaching methods as well as the philosophy developed by Maria Montessori. This is a very child-centered field, where your students will be exposed to a broad range of subjects beyond the typical Pre-K / Primary curriculum, such as zoology and astronomy.
You will be immersed in the Montessori philosophy, which teaches children how to do day-to-day activities through problem solving. As a Montessori teacher you will be a facilitator of learning with unique materials in a classroom setting that is not broken up into discreet blocks of time. Children are allowed to spend time focusing on what they're interested in. By providing them with freedom within a controlled environment, they are able to develop on their own; studies have found that these students are typically able to function and read at levels above other children their age.
