About the Program

Montessori for Educators at Barry University

If you are looking for an innovative approach to education where children love learning, teachers enjoy teaching, and parents are happy, the Montessori system presents that vision to you. The Adrian Dominican School of Education offers educators unique opportunities to learn the philosophy underlying the Montessori Method, acquire a repertoire of teaching strategies which have been found to be successful with children all throughout the world, and develop skills in addressing the challenges of the educational setting.

The 40-credit graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree with specialization in Early Childhood Education equips educators with competencies to guide a class ranging in ages from two and a half through six years. The focus of the program is to understand the unique needs of a young child striving to become independent, acquire the language of one's community, refine one's coordination through movement, and seeking a significant place in one's social group. The desired outcome is an individual who shows self-confidence in one's capacity to learn, who shows courtesy and respect in one's interaction with others, and who exercises freedom with responsibility.

The 39-credit hour program leading to a Master of Science degree with specialization in Elementary Education prepares the educator to implement the Montessori curriculum for children ages six through twelve years. The breadth and depth of the curriculum ignites intellectual curiosity, awakens a special kinship with nature, and inspires gratitude to those who have contributed in the past to benefit humankind. Special tools fro developing literacy and mathematical skills make learning personalized, meaningful and long-lasting.

If you already hold a master's degree, you may pursue a Specialist (Ed.S.) degree with specialization in either Early Childhood or Elementary Education. The 45-credit program includes a synthesis of the Early Childhood curriculum for the specialists in Elementary Education and vice versa. The Montessori courses may also be taken for recertification credits.

The Barry University Montessori Teacher Education Program is full accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS). For program information, contact Dr. Ijya Tulloss, (350) 899-3736.
