TOP 10 REASONS TO CHOOSE BARRY UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK PALM BEACH/TREASURE COAST LOCATION

THE PALM BEACH LOCATION IS AN EXTENSION OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S MOST ESTABLISHED SOCIAL WORK SCHOOL: Barry University’s School of Social Work opened in 1966 in Miami Shores and has been accredited longer than any other social work school in South Florida.  The School of Social Work began offering classes in Palm Beach County in 1981.  The same faculty teaches in both locations.

YOU RECEIVE THE MSW DEGREE QUICKER THAN ANYWHERE ELSE: Students can earn a MSW degree (60 credits) going to school part-time in just over two years (7 semesters). Students with a BSW from an accredited university within the past 5 years and a 3.0 GPA can earn a MSW degree (32 credits) going to school part-time in just over 1 year (4 semesters).

SATURDAY CLASS SCHEDULE ACCOMMODATES WORKING PROFESSIONALS: Developed in response to the needs of working adults who live in, or plan on relocating to, the Palm Beach/Treasure Coast area, the part-time program allows working professionals to receive their Masters degree while continuing to work. Eighty percent of students are currently employed full time in social service agencies while pursuing their degree. Courses are offered on Saturday to accommodate the schedules of these working professionals.

SMALL CLASS SIZE AND INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION: Small class sizes enhance 1-on-1 interaction with professors, academic and field advisors. Students start the program in the fall, and take all classes with the same group of people. This provides a level of collegial intimacy that is difficult to find on larger campuses.

DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION: Palm Beach students represent a diverse group of people. They have chosen to return to school for an advanced degree in clinical social work and represent different ethnic, religious, national, and sexual orientation backgrounds. Nearly 25% of current students were born outside the United States and range in age from 22-53, with an average age of 36 years old.

DIVERSE STUDENT EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Palm Beach students come from many different disciplines. A recent survey found that approximately 50% of students had undergraduate degrees in Social Work or Psychology, whereas the other 50% had undergraduate degrees in Art History, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Legal Studies, and Special Education.

STUDENTS BRING EXTENSIVE SOCIAL WORK EXPERIENCE TO THE CLASSROOM: Palm Beach students have, on average, nine years of working experience in the social service field. Students bring to the classroom practical, hands-on, life experiences which stimulate lively discussion around social work practice.

CONNECTION TO THE COMMUNITY: For more than 40 years, Barry University School of Social Work has educated thousands of area professionals and has an outstanding reputation for developing quality social workers. Your degree will connect you with distinguished Barry University MSW graduates who are working in local agencies.

DYNAMIC REGIONAL GROWTH OFFERS DYNAMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties are experiencing population growth twice that of the rest of the nation. St. Lucie County alone grew over 5% annually for the past 5 years. A growing market is accompanied by a variety of field placement possibilities and job opportunities upon graduation.

TUITION DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUALS EMPLOYED IN HUMAN SERVICES: A 30% tuition discount is available to all part-time students who currently work more than 24 hours/week in the human service field.  A highly responsive financial aid department helps students secure grants and loans.
