Our Field Education curriculum is designed to ensure the integration between the classroom learning experience and direct practice.

The Field Education Department at Barry offers you the opportunity to:

Field Education for MSW Students

Field Education courses are a vital part of the MSW curriculum at Barry. It provides you the opportunity to develop and advance your clinical practice skills in a supervised setting.

Field Education at Barry School of Social Work …

Guides you through the field placement process offering individual attention to the professional interest and learning needs of students

Allows you to complete your internship requirements with flexibility and manageability year-round

Ensures direct practice with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations

MSW 60- Credit Program

Offers two different internships in diverse community-based agencies

  • First year placement requires the completion of 448 internship hours. This course emphasizes the development of generalist practice skills in working with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations.
  • Second year placement requires the completion of 480 internship hours. This course emphasizes the development of advanced clinical social work practice skills in working with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations.
  • Both internships are enhanced by the completion of a total of 16 professional development hours. Professional development activities include attending training workshops, seminars, conferences, and other events designed to extend your knowledge in social work practice.

MSW 32-Credit Advanced Standing Program

Offers one internship in a community-based agency

This two semester internship requires the completion of 480 hours within one community agency

  • Course is designed for students who bring strong generalist practice skills as a foundation for developing advanced clinical practice skills
  • Array of diverse agencies are available to compliment your learning needs
  •  The internship is enhanced by the completion of a total of 8 professional development hours over the two semesters. Professional development activities include attending training workshops, seminars, conferences, and other events designed to extend your knowledge in social work practice

Own Agency Placements (OAP)

One internship may be completed within a human service agency in which a student has been employed for a minimum of six months. Certain criteria must be met prior to approval by the Field Education Department.

International Students will need to apply for university immigration authorization at least two to three weeks prior to starting their internship and meet with an international student advisor at the Barry University Intercultural Center. The student is to request a letter for submission to the Intercultural Center from the School of Social Work documenting internship requirements.

Support for Students

You will be supported in each of your field education internships by the experienced staff of our Field Education Department. In addition, you will be offered the support of a designated Field Educator and a Field Advisor. Your Field Educator is a qualified MSW within the community agency who will closely supervise and support the development of your clinical skills. Your Field Advisor is the designated person from the School of Social Work who will serve as a liaison between the School and your Field Educator within the community agency. The Field Advisor offers particular support to both you and your Field Educator regarding your academic and field education learning needs.
