"My teaching methodology is closely aligned with social work practice methodology. By teaching from a reflective learning perspective, I strive to have the classroom become a model of the clinical encounter and for students to experience the power of clinical interventions such as use of a reflecting team in clinical practice, journaling and role play through direct experience. My professional relationships are grounded in a deep commitment to the Strengths Perspective of Social Work practice and Resiliency theory. As in social work practice, each class is distinctive and the interaction provides opportunities and challenges for mutual growth. I am supportive of yet hold students to the highest standard they can achieve. I maintain an open-door policy for students and encourage communication in person, through telephone or email."
Professor Whelley joined the Barry faculty in 2001. Prior to coming to Barry, she served on the faculty of Marywood University School of Social Work. Professor Whelley received a BA and MSW from Catholic University and a Ph.D. from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. Her professional interests are in child welfare, particularly family preservation; models of family intervention; and curriculum development. Professor Whelley's publications are focused in areas of child welfare practice, field instruction, professional ethics, and social work education. She teaches foundation and advanced practice, family intervention, and child welfare courses. Professor Whelley is an active member of the professional community.
