Nurse anesthesia residents proclaim annual meeting a success

More than 4,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists attended the 75th annual meeting of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists in Minneapolis on Aug 9-13.

Faculty and 18 of Barry’s nurse anesthesia residents attended presentations on evidence-based practice, new techniques of anesthesia delivery, trauma anesthesia, and the ever-changing U.S. health care system.

Residents had the opportunity to meet graduate student residents from all over the country, attend student forums, meet nurse anesthetists from other countries, and meet the leadership of the AANA.

“This meeting opened my eyes to the whole world of nurse anesthesia,” said Erik Mickelson, class of 2009. “I had no idea how much more there is to the profession outside the operating room and everyone in AANA knows Barry University and our faculty.”

Mickelson requested to attend the next AANA meeting and vows to stay professionally active.
Classmate Cary Carter interacted with other students who, like him, serve in the armed forces.

“It was like listening to our Leadership class; everything we learned at Barry this summer in that class was mentioned during the business meeting,” said Carter after attending the AANA business meeting.

Program Administrator John McFadden hosted a special reception for Barry Alumni where faculty and residents joined in.

Barry alumni throughout Florida, Michigan, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas and Alaska encouraged students to “stay focused during the rest of the program and then stay involved in the profession.”
