Barry University's Dr. Andrea Greenbaum, associate professor of English, has been invited by Broward County’s Main Library to lead discussions on several Jewish graphic novels. Greenbaum was asked by Barbara Miller, programming manager of the Broward County Main Library to facilitate the discussions.

Jewish graphic novels are books that are illustrated in sequential art i.e. comic books, and address Jewish themes (the Holocaust, Torah, cultural issues, life as an immigrant, myths, etc.)

Over the next several months Greenbaum will lead discussions in a series titled "Modern Marvels: Jewish Adventures in the Graphic Novel."

The series will discuss the following books:

August 17: "The Complete Maus," by Art Spiegelman, 1-3 p.m.
September 14: "Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer," by Ben Katchor, 1-3 p.m.
October 12: "The Quitter," by Harvey Pekar, 1-3 p.m.
November 9: "The Rabbi’s Cat," by Joann Sfar, 1-3 p.m.

All programs are free of charge, but require that individuals register ahead of time.

Greenbaum has been teaching English since 1992 and administers the Professional Writing Program at Barry University. She serves on the editorial board of College Composition and Communication, Florida English, and Barry Magazine. She is the author of Jews of South Florida (University Press of New England, 2005), The Emancipatory Movements: The Rhetoric of Possibility (State University of New York Press, 2002), Insurrections: Approaches to Resistance in Composition Studies (State University of New York Press, 2001), and her current book, Judaic Perspectives in Rhetoric and Composition (Hampton Press, 2008).
