Barry University’s Andreas School of Business students once again went out in droves to the annual American Cancer Society “Making Strides against Breast Cancer” 5K walk/run in the shops at midtown Miami on Oct. 9, 2011.
For 13 years, the school and its students have volunteered under the direction of their faculty advisor and finance professor Dr. Bruce Payne. Business students help raise money for breast cancer research by participating in the 5k run/walk, selling hats and t-shirts and assisting runners and walkers by placing traffic cones, setting up displays and passing out water.
“I think our students are always more than willing to volunteer for this event because everyone knows someone or some family that has been affected by this terrible disease,” said Payne. “I believe that students, and everyone else involved, simply feels good just to know that they have made a small contribution toward its eventual defeat.”
Payne, who came to Barry in 1998 from Louisiana, served on the American Cancer Society board of directors and wanted to continue making a difference and get the school of business at Barry involved.
“It’s a little hard for me to realize that the Barry students that started this tradition 13 years ago are now in their mid-thirties with children of their own, hopefully preparing to come to Barry and continue this and all the other fine traditions we have here."
