GREENVILLE, TENN. – Barry University’s men’s soccer team defeated Tusculum Saturday night, 2-0, in a rebound performance after dropping the season opener just two days before.

Barry (1-1-0) played the aggressor from the beginning of the game. They looked like a different team, much more determined than they appeared in the season opener. In the early goings of the game Barry had few minor opportunities and 17 minutes into the match Thomas Coombes found himself one-on-one with Goellner the goalkeeper.

Goellner was caught out of position about 18 yards out and Coombes attempted to chip it over his head, but sent the shot high and the Bucs failed to capitalize.

It wasn’t until the 37th minute that Kendall Sealy controlled a loose ball inside the box and was able to get a shot off. The shot was deflected by a Pioneer defender and slipped past Goellner for the game’s first goal. The 1-0 advantage would carry Barry into the intermission.

The Bucs came out of the half hungry and looking to add to their 1-0 advantage when Connor Randel made a run down the left side. Randel made a move inside past a defender and struck a shot from roughly eight yards out that connected and gave Barry a two goal lead.

The two goals were more than enough on a night in which Barry imposed its defense on Tusculum. The Pioneers managed just five shots in the entire match, two in the second half and only one of those looks was on goal.

Tusculum (1-1-0) was never able to penetrate the Buccaneer defense and did not have many quality opportunities the entire match. The Bucs intensity defensively was a factor throughout.

Fred Perez earned his first career win in the shutout and improved to 1-1 on the year.

The Buccaneers wrapped up their road trip with a win and head back to Miami Shores where they will prepare for their home opener. Barry welcomes Bentley University in one week’s time with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 8.

Game coverage will feature the first-ever live video broadcast of men’s soccer at Buccaneer field with live-stats also available through the Barry University athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM. Live video coverage will be available for a majority of the home matches throughout the season.
