WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University’s women’s soccer team fell to No. 21 Tampa Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA South Region Tournament, 1-0.

Barry (7-7-2, 3-4-1 SSC) played a well fought match, and it seems clear that head coach Fred Jungemann has his team heading in the right direction. In their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2005, the Bucs drew a familiar foe in Tampa.

The Spartans (14-3-4, 5-1-2 SSC) were aggressive from the opening whistle and held an 11-2 shot advantage in the first half alone. A resilient bunch, the Buccaneers continued to fight, as they have throughout the season, in order to create opportunities. Unfortunately, on this night the ball did not roll the Bucs’ way.

In the 18th minute, SSC Player of the Year Lauren Moore put Tampa on the board with her 18th goal of the season.

In the second half, the Bucs knocked on the door, but were not able to find the equalizer, losing to the Spartans for the third time this season. Tampa entered the match unbeaten in their last nine contests, going 5-0-4 throughout the stretch.

Goalkeeper Becca Rogers finished the match with six saves, and the Bucs were shut out for the first time all season.
