Barry Student-Athletes Post Record Highs
Barry's student-athletes posted record-highs in the classroom in the fall.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s student-athletes established a new academic high in the fall semester as 74.3 percent of the Buccaneers athletes posted grade point averages of 3.0 or better.

Each of Barry’s 12 teams had GPAs above 3.0 for the fall semester.  It marks the first time all 12 sports had team GPAs above 3.0.

The Bucs women’s golf team had a 3.678 cumulative GPA in the semester. Volleyball posted a 3.497. Men’s soccer had a 3.319. Men’s tennis had a 3.278.

“We are very proud of our student-athletes and their academic achievements,” Barry Athletic Director Mike Covone said. “All 12 of Barry University’s programs have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher with nearly 75 percent of all student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher, as well. That is outstanding!”

The average term grade point average for student-athletes was 3.307 – also a Barry University high.  The university previous high was a 3.273 during the fall of 2011.

The average team cume GPA rose to 3.298 with women’s golf leading the way at 3.674. Men’s soccer was the highest of the male sports at 3.354.

A total of 5.5 percent of all student-athletes recorded 4.0 GPAs, earning them President’s List honors.

“As an NCAA Division II institution and members of the Sunshine State Conference, we are committed to a comprehensive, balanced program of students as learners and student-athletes that compete at the highest level,” Covone said. “Through the leadership of our administrators, coaches and staff, the department has created an environment that encourages and supports these types of accomplishments by all student-athletes, which is excellence in both academics and athletics.”

Barry has won nine national championships.
