AUSTIN, Texas -- Barry University's No. 1-ranked men's golf team won the runner-up trophy at the St. Edward's Invitational Tuesday, finishing 14 strokes behind No. 2 Nova Southeastern.

The Buccaneers, which won their first tournament of the spring, shot 293-287-308 -- 888 on the 6.909-yard Grey Rock Golf Club, battling through tougher conditions in Tuesday's final round of the 16-team event. The Bucs were the runner-up last year with an identical 888 54-hole score. Nova repeated as tournament champs, having won the 2012 title with an 883.

Barry's Scott Smyers shot 75 in the final round, tying with teammate Adam Svensson for sixth individually. Svensson shot 79 in the third round. Both finished at 2-over 218.

Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter won the medalist honor with a 3-under 213. Colorado-Colorado Springs' Kevin Witte was the runner-up, two strokes back, and Nova's Ben Taylor shot even par to finish third.

Barry's Marcus Segerstrom tied for 15th at 223. Marcelo Huarte tied for 35th at 230, and Jaime Rodriguez was 67th at 246.

Segerstrom finished with 17 birdies, which was one shy of Kevin Witte's event-high 18. Bucs teammate Adam Svensson had 15.

The Buccaneers will compete in the Southeastern Collegiate in Valdosta, Ga., next Monday and Tuesday.
