MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team swept a pair of seven inning games Wednesday night at Feinbloom field against the University of the Sciences by scores of 9-5 and 9-4.
Adrian English and Sheehan Planas-Arteaga continued to tear the cover off the ball, lifting the Bucs (15-7, 4-2 SSC) offense as they have all year in route to a double-header sweep of the Devils.
Game One
English delivered a two-RBI single in the first scored Michael Slabach, who led off with a walk, and Planas, after he reached on a single to right, to give the Bucs the 2-0 advantage.
The Devils (1-4) put up three runs in the fifth inning on just two hits and Buccaneer error to take a 4-3 lead, but Barry answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single to left off the bat of Joe Iorio to tie the game at four.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Barry trailing 5-4 Planas sparked a rally that would see the Bucs score five straight runs.
Planas belted a solo-homer to right to get the rally started and the Bucs belted six consecutive hits in all to put the game out of reach.
Tim Blackmon allowed just one hit and one run in two innings of work in his first start of the season. Frank Szczepanik struck out six hitters in three innings of relief, but it was Kevin Youst who picked up the win after 1.1 scoreless innings of work to go along with 3 K’s.
Six Buccaneers compiled multiple hits in the win but were led by Planas and J.C. Cardenas with three hits each.
English, Tyler Kellmann, Joe Iorio and Mike Diaz each added a pair of hits. Iorio also drove in three.
Game Two
Tyler Kinley took the mound for the Bucs in the nightcap in his first start of the season and this time Barry led the entire way after claiming a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Once again it was Planas who delivered a bases-clearing double to spark the Buccaneer rally early in the game against the Devils.
Kinley did not allow a run in three innings of work and finished with 3 K’s to earn the win.
Matthew Garlock struck out four batters in relief scattering four hits and allowing just two runs, neither of which were earned.
Rene Estrada pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game and struck out two batters in the process.
Slabach led the Bucs’ attack in the nightcap with a 3-for-5 performance on his birthday.
The Buccaneers, winners of six straight, are off until Monday when they’ll host St. Michaels University.
