Women's Soccer Opens SSC Play With Win Over Mocs

LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers started off their Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer slate with a 4-1 win over the Florida Southern Moccasins at Barnett Field on Saturday night.

Lavinia Nkomo scored two goals, including the game-winner, and assisted on another to lead the Bucs (6-3-0, 1-0-0 SSC) to the victory. Dominique Richardson and Chelsea Stoeckigt each had a goal and an assist, while Lauren Manna added one assist as well.

The Bucs got out front early, as Richardson connected in the seventh minute with an assist from Nkomo. Nkomo brought the ball up the middle and passed to Richardson on the left wing for the goal.

The Mocs (1-6-3, 0-1-0 SSC) knotted things up in the 15th minute. Kristy Legoas sent a cross into the box and Margot Chowansky laid it off for Kara Moore for the goal.

Nkomo notched the game-winner in the 36th minute. Stoeckigt sent a long pass up out of the back to Richardson who found Nkomo unmarked at the top of the box for the goal.

The Bucs carried the 2-1 lead into the half and then added a pair of insurance goals in the second frame.  Stoeckigt scored in the 48th minute on a missed clearance by the Moccasin defense. Nkomo capped the scoring in the 84th minute. Manna drove the ball down into the box and dropped it back for Nkomo for the goal.

Becca Rogers, who had two saves, earned the win in goal for the Bucs. Erin Moseley had three saves on the Bucs’ seven shots on goal for FSC.

The Bucs return home for Rivalry Week, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps, to face Nova Southeastern on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:00 pm at Buccaneer Field.
