Barry University Celebrates Peace Month

Barry University’s mission statement calls for members of the university community to “foster peace and non-violence.” For the third consecutive year in September, Barry celebrated Peace Month as a collaborative effort from many University departments.

This annual celebration began with the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, September 4. It also included a variety of peace-related activities throughout the month of September, including the 9-11 Memorial Project at Amelia Earhart Park, an Interfaith Prayer Service at the Peace Pole, a photo slideshow of the Fanjeaux summer program, a Deliberative Dialogue on A Right to Bear Arms: Gun Rights and Gun Control, and a Mission Brown Bag Lunch Series on the Catholic Higher Education using “Mission and Core Commitments: A Commentary.

In addition, a Peace-In was held that highlighted a series of workshops and commenced with a Carnival for Peace outside of the Cor Jesu Chapel. Students were engaged in the month of activities as well.

Erica Nanoo, a Barry University nursing student and resident assistant, spearheaded a Tibetan peace flag project based on the prayer flags of Tibet within the resident halls. Nanoo’s program was originally conceived during RA training with a couple other RA’s.
