MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University men’s soccer team defeated Florida Tech University, 2-0, at Buccaneer field Saturday night.

Nico Gercke scored and then added an assist on Patrick Drmola’s team-high sixth goal of the season, to lift Barry (6-7-1, 3-2-0 SSC) to a shutout victory over the Panthers.

In the first half the Bucs controlled the pace and created several opportunities, but it wasn’t until the 34th minute that Gercke found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie on a header following a corner kick opportunity.

Florida Tech (4-7-1, 1-4-0 SSC) was held to just three shots in the entire first half.

With a 1-0 lead in the second half, Gercke struck again. This time, the junior midfielder connected with Patrick Drmola on a cross into the box. Drmola’s header beat Panther’s goalkeeper Mitch Thorn to give Barry a 2-0 advantage.

The defense tightened up late, and Johnny Rodrigues finished with six saves as the Buccaneers put the game away.

With the win, the Bucs put an end to a two-game skid and improved to 3-2 in conference play. Barry avenged a 4-1 loss at Florida Tech earlier this season in a non-conference matchup between the SSC foes on Sep. 21.

Tuesday night, the Bucs travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to battle Lynn University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with live-stat and broadcast available through the Barry University athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
