MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers advanced to the semifinals on the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Soccer Championship after tying the Florida Southern Moccasins 1-1, but coming out on top 4-2 in the penalty kicks.

The fourth-seeded Bucs (8-8-2) struck first in the 31st minute when Kris Wilkinson blasted home a shot from almost 30 yards out. Mumbi Kwesele and Nico Gerke picked up assists.

The Mocs (5-8-2) evened the match in the 56th minute. Alexi Cortes won the ball on the right wing and chipped a pass into the box where Jonathan Radvogin headed it back to Cortes’ feet for the goal.

The game stayed tied through two scoreless overtime periods. In the shootout, both teams connected on their first shots with Luke Jenner for Florida Southern and Johnny Rodrigues for Barry converting their kicks. In the second round, Rodrigues stopped Jeremiah Garcia’s shot, while Pablo Georgakopolous converted for the Bucs. In the third round, FSC’s Carlos Rodriguez missed high and Wilkinson knocked his home. After Adam Hansjons converted for the Mocs, Gerke slotted one home past Cole Clingerman to clinch the decision for the Bucs.

Rodrigues added another school record to his portfolio after making five saves. He now has 291 for his career, surpassing Vinicius Cavani (1996-99) as the Bucs’ all-time saves leader. Clingerman had 10 saves for the Mocs. Both keepers were bailed out by their defenders. Lucas Rio Torto and Michael Fernandez both swept balls off the line for Barry, while Peter Allansson had one for the Mocs.

The Bucs now face the top seed and host Saint Leo at 7:00 pm at University Field on Friday, Nov. 8 in the tournament semifinals. Rollins will face Lynn at 4:30 in the other.
