LAKELAND, Fla. – Barry University’s women’s basketball team started 2014 on the right foot with a 63-58 win on the road against Florida Southern Saturday night.

Barry (7-3, 1-1 SSC) held the Mocs to 36 percent shooting from the floor and dominated the glass and the paint in the win.

The first half began as a defensive slugfest with both teams struggling to find any rhythm offensively. Throughout the half the Buccaneers created quality looks from the field, but struggled to shoot the ball in the early going and then Tyler Hardy took over.

The Sunshine State Conference’s leading scorer put the Bucs’ offense on her back and took the ball to the basket time and again, finishing with 15 first-half points on 7-13 shooting.

Although the Buccaneers as a team struggled to knockdown open looks in the first half, they were resilient on the glass, out-rebounding the Moccasins (4-7, 0-2 SSC) 28-15 in the first half including a 12-3 advantage on offensive rebounds.

Barry trailed for most of the period, but the Bucs put together a 9-5 run capped off by Hardy’s layup as time expired to take a 31-27 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Buccaneers picked up right where they left off. With a 13-4 run to start the period, the Bucs extended their lead to 13 and controlled the game the rest of the way.

Hardy finished with a career-high 28 points and 14 rebounds, but it was an overall team rebounding effort that helped secure the road win.

Kaylia Richardson grabbed 11 rebounds and chipped in 11 points. Danika Pisconeri finished with six points and nine rebounds as the Bucs made their presence felt on the glass all night with a 56-35 advantage.

Cashala Thompson and Mariah Harris both scored 12 points to lead the Mocs.
