Baseball's Planas-Arteaga Named NCBWA South Region Hitter Of The Week

DALLAS On Wednesday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association released its weekly NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards of the season for the period ending March 2. Barry’s Sheehan Planas-Arteaga was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week as well as the Division II South Region Hitter of the Week.

Planas-Arteaga went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate against No. 5 Florida Tech hitting two home runs and walking twice. The junior scored two runs and drove in three to lead No. 10 Barry to a 14-13 10-inning win over the Panthers. Planas-Arteaga then went 3-of-5 at the plate against the University of Mary with two doubles. He scored once and drove in two runs. He finished the week going 7-of-9 (.778) at the plate, slugged 1.667 and held a .818 on-base percentage.

The junior outfielder was named the SSC Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, March 3 and heads into Friday’s matchup with Florida Southern with a .508 batting average through the first 17 games of the season.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and officials votes in the Howser Award Player of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America Voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publications and writing contests.

The No. 10 Bucs square-off against Florida Southern College Friday in the Sunshine State Conference opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live-stat and video broadcast available through the Barry University athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
