During tax season there is often a spike in phishing and malware scams. The IRS as well as the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) warns consumers to be especially vigilant as it relates to protecting personal identity information and data privacy.
- Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, visits, or email messages from individuals asking about employees or other internal information. If an unknown individual claims to be from a legitimate organization, try to verify his or her identity directly with the company.
- Do not follow links in unsolicited email messages.
- Keep antivirus software up to date.
