A lecture in honor of Spanish Women Writers

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of English and Foreign Languages is celebrating 200 years of GertrudisGómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga with the lecture entitled "De conservadoras a librepensadoras: Escritoras españolas del siglo XIX.” This 19th-century Cuban-born playwright and poet is considered one of the foremost Romantic writers of the 19th century and one of the greatest women poets.

La Facultad de Artes y Ciencias y el Departamento de Filología Inglesa y Lenguas Modernas celebra el segundo centenario del nacimiento de Doña Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga con la conferencia académica con título "De conservadoras a librepensadoras: Escritoras españolas del siglo XIX.” Nacida en Cuba, Gómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga adquirió celebridad literaria por su obra dramática y poética durante el periodo romántico.

Her anti-slavery novel Sab (1841) has often been compared to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). Banned in Cuba for its controversial social critique, Sab highlights the moral superiority of the protagonist, a black slave, over the white characters. Through a discussion of Avellaneda's works, this lecture offers insights of the Romantic movement and the contribution of women writers to social change.

Guest speaker Dr. M. Carmen Simón-Palmer will be discussing the famous author's career within the context of 19th century women writers.

María del Carmen Simón-Palmer (Ph.D. in History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) is Professor at the Center of Humanities of Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the most prestigious research institution in Spain. She is Academic Member of the Royal Academy of Ciencias, Bellas Letras y Nobles Artes de Córdoba, and the Spanish Royal Academy of Gastronomy.

She has taught courses in many universities in Spain, Italy, France, Romania, and the U.S. and has been keynote speaker in conferences in Miami, Gainesville, Atlanta, Chicago, Milan, Venice, Panamá, and Poland, among others.

Dr. Simón-Palmer serves as a member of eleven prominent publishing boards. Several research projects on bibliography of literature funded by the Ministry of Education have been led by Dr. Simón-Palmer. She has taken part in the Biographical Dictionary of the Real Academia de la Historia with around thirty biographies of Spanish women writers. She has published 67 monographs, and hundreds of book chapters and scholarly articles to date. Her particular expertise in Spanish women writers informs this discussion of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga.
