Sexual Assault Statistics

  • Fewer than 5% of completed and attempted rapes of college women are reported to law enforcement officials.
  • In 80-90% of cases, victim and assailant know each other; and the more intimate the relationship, the more likely it is for a rape to be completed.
  • 13% of college women are victims of a stalking incident at least once during their college years.
  • 75% of the men and 55% of the women involved in acquaintance rapes were drinking or taking drugs just before the attack.
  • One in four college women report surviving rape (15 percent) or attempted rape (12 percent) since their fourteenth birthday.
  • 42% of rape survivors told no one about the rape.
  • 57% of rapes happen on dates.
  • 30% of rape survivors contemplate suicide after the rape.
  • 3% of college men report surviving rape or attempted rape as a child or adult.
  • Approximately 90% of victims of sexual assault on college campuses know their attacker.
