Men's Golf: Svensson, Canada Take Silver at World Championships

KARUIZAWA, Japan – Barry University junior men’s golfer Adam Svensson helped Canada win a silver medal at the World Amateur Team Championship.

Svensson, last year’s NCAA Division II Player of the Year, shot 7-under 65 in the final round at Karuizawa 72 Golf East Course. The Canadians, which entered the final day six strokes behind the eventual champion United States of America, finished with a team total of 133 in the final round.  The Americans finished with a 38-under 534 in the four-round tournament.

Canada was second at 36-under 536. Spain was third at 35-under 537 in the 67-team tournament.

Svensson was the top Canadian, shooting 69-69-66-65 – 269. Teammates Corey Conners shot 66-69-67-68 – 270, and Taylor Pendrith 68-67-69-70 – 274.

USA’s Denny McCarthy shot 68-68-67-64 – 267. Bryson DeChambeau shot 69-67-61-73 – 270, and Beau Hossler 68-66-68-75 – 277.

Spain’s Jon Rahm, an All-American at Arizona State, shot a tournament-record 23-under 70-64-62-67 – 263. Mario Galiano shot 68-69-70-67 – 274. Daniel Berna shot 75-69-77-69 – 290.

Sweden was fourth at 34-under 538, and Argentina fifth at 33-under 539.

Rahm’s 263 eclipsed the previous mark of 269 set by Jack Nicklaus in 1960 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Canada and the USA were tied at 37-under on the 18th green when DeChambeau and Conners were finishing the last round. DeChambeau, an All-American at Southern Methodist University, made birdie while Conners, who recently graduated from Kent State, left his short.
