Men's Tennis Doubles Pair Moves on to Semifinals

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University men’s tennis players Nico Dreer and Franco Echenique beat Rollins’ Henning Ander and Hristo Koussev, 8-2, in the Varner Invitational B Bracket quarterfinals Saturday.

The Buccaneers pair will play Saint Leo’s Bruno Sisti and Pedro Gonzales in Sunday’s semifinals. Sisti and Gonzales defeated Barry’s other pair of Ajdin Tahirovic and Austin Cruz, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.

In the A singles main draw, Dreer beat Rollins’ Anton Bettink, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Dreer lost to Troy’s Gabriel Sciacca, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.

In the C singles main draw, Tahirovic defeated Alvaro Barrero of Bethune-Cookman, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), in a suspended match from Friday. In the quarterfinals, Tahirovic beat Central Florida’s Arium Watane, 1-6, 6-4, 10-2.

Echenique was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Bethune-Cookman’s Greg Almeida in the B bracket consolation. He also beat Saint Leo's Jacobo Gonzales Tarrio, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the consolation final.

Cruz defeated Saint Leo’s James Defusto in the C consolation semifinals, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the consolation final.

Play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
