Barry University supporters honored on National Philanthropy Day

Longtime Barry University donors Ellen Sanders Galkin and Glenn A. Hubert were recognized on National Philanthropy Day celebrations this year.

Ellen Sanders Galkin and Glenn A. Hubert are both loyal friends and supporters of Barry and over the years their generous contributions have supported campus initiatives such as student scholarships, the Glenn Hubert Learning Center, and other campus initiatives.

Thanks to their generosity, Glenn A. Hubert and Ellen Sanders Galkin were honored on Nov. 12 in celebration of National Philanthropy Day by two area Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in both the Broward and Miami Chapters.

Ellen Sanders Galkin, RN, MBA, is Barry University’s Broward Table Honoree. She has dedicated her life to advocating for the nursing profession, as well as the personal, professional and political rights of women. In her lifetime, Sanders Galkin has transitioned from bedside nursing to collective bargaining and policy development with the New York State Nurses Association. From there she went on to make board/officer appointments with the American Nurses Association and later became a nurse faculty educator at Barry. In 2008, Sanders Galkin and her husband, Richard, established the Kathleen Papes Memorial Scholarship at Barry University in honor of her lifelong friend and colleague. The scholarship program, supported through generous annual contributions from the Richard and Ellen Galkin Foundation, has afforded dozens of promising students the resources necessary to pursue graduate degrees in nursing.

Glenn A. Hubert, PhD, is Barry University’s Miami-Dade Table Honoree Hubert is being recognized for his longstanding contributions to Barry. In 2007, Hubert’s generous donation allowed the establishment of the Glenn Hubert Learning Center. Glenn was inspired to help Barry students excel academically as a result of his experience as an educator in the Miami-Dade County Public School system. Recently, he announced another gift for the Learning Center. Hubert’s unwavering belief in Barry’s mission and the future of its students makes it fitting that he be recognized as a 2014 National Philanthropy Day Barry honoree.
