Data Privacy Day 2015, What Can You Do to Better Protect Your Data?

Recognize and Learn About Data Privacy

The Information Security Office at Barry University recognizes January 28, Data Privacy Day. This international holiday was created to raise awareness about protecting privacy and data as well as promoting privacy and data protection best practices. The United States Congress, the Council of Europe, and numerous organizations, recognize this day to help educate individuals, families, consumers, and businesses about the importance of protecting privacy and personal information online.

  •  Protect Your Information/Data
    • Make passwords long and strong.
    • Back up valuable work and digital information by making an electronic copy and storing it safely.
  • Protect Your Social Media Privacy
    • When available, set the privacy and security settings on websites and social media to your comfort level for information sharing. It’s ok to limit how and with whom you share information.
    • Be wary of communications that implores you to act immediately or asks for personal information.
  • Protect Your Computer
    • Keep security software current.
    • Protect all devices that connect to the Internet from viruses and malware.
