Barry Stamps Scholars attend 3rd Stamps Scholars National Convention

Fifteen Barry University Stamps Leadership Scholars joined approximately 500 others from 41 universities around the country at Georgia Institute of Technology for the third Stamps Scholars National Convention from April 10-12. Held biennially since 2011, the convention exists to encourage exchange and collaboration among Stamps Leadership Scholars.

The convention was an opportunity for Stamps Scholars and administrators across the nation to form connections — inspiring collaboration, building the community and brand of the scholarship, and celebrating the vision of Penny and Roe Stamps for whom the scholarship is named.

Activities officially began with breakfast on Friday, April 10, and continued with a series of programming until mid-day on Sunday, April 12. The convention featured speeches from Penny and Roe Stamps, Harvard Business School professor Bill George, public speaker and educator Bill Curry, and CNN journalist Tom Foreman, who is the father of a Stamps Scholar alumna. Students who attended the conference had the opportunity to tour Atlanta and visit such sites as CNN headquarters, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Carter Center, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Previous conventions were held at the University of Miami (2011) and the University of Michigan (2013). Past speakers have included Donna Shalala, former president of the University of Miami; Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of the Knight Foundation; Jeremy Farris, and Georgia Tech Stamps Scholar alumnus and Rhodes Scholar

The Stamps Scholars Program is one of the nation’s largest merit-based national scholarship programs. Stamps Scholarships are generous multi-year scholarships and often include enrichment funding, which allows students to study abroad or explore research opportunities. For the 2014-15 school year, the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation and its partners provided approximately $20.9 million in scholarship support to 589 Stamps Scholars. About 223 new Stamps Scholars will enroll in the fall of 2015.
