Nominations Now Open for 40 Great Moments in Sunshine State Conference History

On Nov. 12, 1989, the Barry University Buccaneers defeated Keene State 4-0 in women's soccer to capture the first NCAA Division II National Championship for a program that was, at the time, only six years old. Over the next 25 years, the Bucs have had many memorable moments and now the Sunshine State Conference is gathering a list of moments to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the league.

The conference office is collecting nominations for 40 Great Moments in Sunshine State Conference History, to commemorate the last 40 years.  Moments may include athletic excellence, academic excellence, community engagement, and acts of good sportsmanship.  We invite current and past student-athletes, alumni, administrators, coaches, and all fans to nominate their favorite moments.

We need your help. As we make a list of nominations, we are soliciting all alumni, friends and fans to submit their memories of a great moment from Barry University history. Please include as much detail as you have along with any photos or video of the event. Please submit your ideas to athletics@barry.eduby Sept. 15.

The SSC opened competition with a men's basketball game that pitted Florida Southern College against Eckerd College on Dec. 3, 1975. Since that day, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to the Division II "Conference of National Champions."

Sports Information Directors from SSC member schools will select which moments will be highlighted on sunshinestateconference.com. Five moments will be announced each week beginning in early October and culminating on the December 3rd anniversary date.
