Barry University School of Social Work graduate Denasia Lawrence (MSW ’16) was named the winner of the State Farm Sing Your Way competition as part of the Neighborhood Awards, which took place July 22 – 24 in Las Vegas.
The singing competition began with several entries, varying from YouTube submissions to live auditions, followed by a series of rounds for the competition. Out of all entries, 16 singers were chosen to compete live on the Steve Harvey Morning show. The 16 were then narrowed down until four contestants were selected to move on the final round and compete for the $10,000 prize.
Lawrence competed in front of a panel of judges and a live audience of 12,000 people and was chosen as the winner and the Sing Your Way competition.
During her time at Barry University School of Social Work, Denasia spent time working with individuals and families at the Public Defender’s Office of Miami-Dade County as well as Miami Children’s Initiative located in Liberty City.
