VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Barry University volleyball team started the 2011 season on the right foot with a pair of regional wins in the Fairfield Inn Azalea Classic hosted by Valdosta State University. The Bucs first downed Adelphi 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) then beat Valdosta State 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 12-25, 30-28).

The Bucs began the day with a three-set win over Adelphi in the afternoon match. In the first set, Barry stormed out to an 11-6 lead with the help of seven combined kills from Mariana Lisboa and Tania Torres. The Bucs extended the first-set lead to 18-12 before the Panthers went on a 9-5 run to cut the lead to 23-21. Barry remained resilient however, capitalizing on Adelphi errors and taking the first set 25-23.

In the second set, Barry and Adelphi traded points back-and-forth through 8-8 before Barry took seven of nine points for a 15-10 lead. The Bucs maintained the five-point lead through the end of the set when a Lanie Muys kill gave Barry a 2-0 lead.

The Bucs again jumped out to a lead in the third set, gaining a 17-10 advantage midway through the game. The Panthers outscored Barry 11-8 down the stretch, but a number of errors and six Buccaneer kills proved too much for Adelphi in the third set.

In the evening match, the Bucs took a 3-1 win over host Valdosta State.

In the first two sets, the Bucs and Blazers were evenly matched as neither team took more than a five point lead. The Bucs, however prevailed winning 25-21 in set one and 25-23 in set two.

The third set was all Valdosta as the Bucs struggled with errors while Valdosta hit .441 for the 25-12 win.

In the fourth set the teams traded points back-and-forth through 17-17 before the Blazers went on a 4-2 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Bucs, however, fought back, tying it at 22-22 with the help of kills by Mima Hajdukovic and Torres.

The teams again traded points through 27-27. Moments later, Valdosta State took a 28-27 advantage. Yet the Bucs ultimately walked away with the win as Hajdukovic earned a kill and an ace to give Barry the 29-28 lead. A Valdosta State error ended the match with Barry on top 30-28.

For the day, the Bucs combined for 88 kills. Torres finished with 27 while Lisboa had 25. Hajdukovic paced the offense with 50 assists while Libby Walter chipped in with 33. The team combined for 24 total blocks while Jenna Duddleston led the defense with 25 digs.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow when they play Albany State at 11:00 a.m and Augusta State at 5:00 p.m.
