WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry softball team swept the weekly awards from the Sunshine State Conference on opening weekend winning both player and pitcher of the week after a 3-1 performance at the South Region Crossover Tournament in Pensacola, Fla.

Junior third baseman Sarah Broeseker batted .429 with an RBI and three runs as the Buccaneers opened the season with three road wins against a pair of in-region foes, including a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Valdosta State. Broeseker hit safely in all four games and had a pair of hits in two outings. She belted a double in each of the Bucs’ first three games. Broeseker plated Barry’s lone run in the upset over Valdosta. Hitting in the leadoff spot, she tallied a .467 on-base percentage to go along with a .643 slugging mark. She was flawless in the field.

Senior left-hander Brianna Smith went 2-0 with a save in three appearances at West Florida’s regional crossover. In 14.1 innings, she allowed three earned runs on 12 hits and five walks. She struck out eight batters. Smith earned a complete-game shutout in the Bucs’ 1-0 win over No. 6 Valdosta State. She then tossed a complete game in a 5-4 decision over host West Florida. In the nightcap against UWF, she took the circle with the tying runs on base to snuff out an Argonaut come-back attempt in Barry’s 4-2 victory. Smith concluded the week with a 1.47 ERA.

The Bucs travel this weekend to Clearwater, Fla., for the Eckerd College Invitational sponsored by 3n2.
