GREENVILLE, S.C.—Barry University’s baseball team fell at the hands of Lander University Friday night 4-1 in the first of a three game set in South Carolina over the weekend.

Barry (3-3) got things started in the top of the first inning with James Young’s two out RBI single to right field driving in Sheehan Planas for the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Wellander surrendered a leadoff single. The Bearcats (5-4) would capitalize on a pair of Buccaneer errors and with the bases loaded Jeff May singled to shallow right-center field to even the score at 1-1. Lander would grab the lead after Wellander surrendered a bases loaded walk, but the senior would work his way out of the jam maintaining the game at 2-1.

After surrendering a run in the first inning, Todd Hughson held the Buccaneer bats silent striking out nine over seven innings of work. Hughson was coming off a complete game no-hitter in his first start of the season.

Julio Ramos led off the top of the eighth inning with a line drive to center field off Ross Davis who relieved Hughson. Harold Holness moved Ramos over to second on a sacrifice bunt, but the Buccaneers were unable to capitalize.

Calvin Rayburn relieved Wellander in the eighth for the Bucs and the Bearcats added two runs in the frame increasing their lead to 4-1.

Barry brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but were held scoreless, losing by a final of 4-1. Wellander allowed two runs, one earned, struck out six and scattered five hits in seven innings of work but picked up the loss moving him to 1-1 on the season.

Hughson picked up his second win of the season and Davis earned his first save of the spring as the Bearcats were able to take game one of the series.

Lyndon Coleman led Barry with two hits while Holness, Young, and Ramos also added hits

The Buccaneers will look to bounce back tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader in order to finish the series before Sunday because of inclimate weather. Live-stat and video broadcast coverage available with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 12:00 p.m.
