Barry University men's golf team led after the first round of the Valdosta State Southeastern Collegiate Monday at the 7,140-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
The No. 3-ranked Buccaneers, fresh off a runner-up finish last week in Austin, Texas, shot four strokes better than Alabama's opening-round 285 to grab hold of the early lead in this two-day, three-round event featuring 14 teams and 74 individuals.
West Florida and Florida Southern each shot 291 in the first round, settling into a tie for fourth, 10 strokes behind the Buccaneers' 281.
Barry's Marcus Sergerstrom 4-under 68, and sat in a tie for second on the individual leader board. Daniel Stapff shot 3-under 69, and was tied for fifth. North Alabama's Tyler Chandler had a one-stroke lead over Sergerstrom and Florida Southern's Lee White after 18 holes.
Marcelo Huarte shot 2-under 70, and was tied for ninth, meaning three Barry golfers were under par to open the tournament. Buccaneer teammates Simon Forsslund shot 74, and Scott Smyers 75 in the first round.
