MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Marcelo Huarte was all smiles after his approach shot on the par-4, 325-yard 12th hole Monday. That's because the Buccaneers sophomore from Miami felt right at home.
His approach shot was his last shot on the hole that was averaging just under par in the 82-player field at the Buccaneer Invitational presented by Carrabba's Italian Grill at Normandy Shores Golf Club 6,805-yard course Monday.
Huarte fired a first-round 65, which was one off the school record on the par-71 course, and his Buccaneer teammates shot back-to-back 281s to fall into a tie for the lead with Laval at 562 after two rounds of the Bucs' home tournament.
Huarte followed up his 65 with a 72 in the final 18 holes of Monday's 36-hole format, and is third at 5-under 137. Nova Southeastern's Oscar Lengden shot 69-65 -- 134 to grab the lead at 8-under entering Tuesday's final round. Laval's Sonny Michaud shot 64-71 -- 135, and is second. Michaud's 64 was one stroke off the course record set on Dec. 24, 2010.
Cal State Stanislaus and Nova Southeastern are tied for third at 568, six strokes behind the Montreal City-based Laval, and hometown Miami Shores-based Barry, which owns the top spot in the Nike/Golf World Coaches national Division II poll.
Lynn, behind Marcelo Rozo's back-to-back 69s, is fifth at 570.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes Tuesday in the 14-team event featuring six of the Top 25 teams, including the nation's Nos. 1-4 ranked teams.
Barry's Scott Smyers is in a five-way tie for seventh after shooting 2-under 140. He had a closing round 69 Monday. Smyers reeled off 11 birdies Monday. Lengden leads the field with 13 birdies entering Tuesday's final round.
Barry's Berry Jole, playing as an individual, shot an opening-round 3-under 68, and finished with a 74. He is tied for 13th at even-par 142.
Simon Forsslund shot 72-72 -- 144, and is 2-over, in a six-way tie for 25th. Danny Stapff shot back-to-back 73s to cap the first day at 4-over 146. Stapff knocked a first-round sand shot within three inches of the cup, and sank nine birdies on the day.
Huarte had eight birdies.
Marcus Segerstrom fired a second-round 68 to finish the day at 147. Segerstrom, Jole and Roberto Cacho, also playing as an individual, had 25 pars in the first two rounds. Cacho shot 76-73 -- 149. Jaime Rodriguez shot 75-76 -- 151. John Yu shot 76-78 -- 154.
Barry is the four-time defending champion of the tournament.
