MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 5-3 in extra innings, before coming back to win the nightcap 7-6.
Game one turned into a pitcher’s duel between Buccaneer right-hander Jordan Wellander and Anthony Figliolia.
Both teams traded zeros through the first three frames, and the Tars struck first blood in the fourth on a Sean Reilly RBI double to left.
Wellander (5-4) continued to roll, as he scattered four hits and just one run in seven innings of work while fanning eight.
The Bucs (17-19, 10-8 SSC) answered with a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double off the bat of James Young and an RBI single to left by Lyndon Coleman.
Unfortunately, errors plagued the Bucs and eventually led to a pair of runs in the eighth that resulted in the Tar’s 3-2 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, the Buccaneers rallied in the ninth for the second consecutive night. Tim Blackmon drilled a two-out solo home run to even the game at five.
Unable to finish the comeback, the Bucs allowed a pair of runs in the extra frame en route to the loss.
Figliolia pitched nine innings and allowed just three earned runs to earn the win.
The nightcap was anything but a pitcher’s duel, as both teams struggled defensively in a game that saw 11 errors total between the two squads.
Barry jumped out to an early lead with four hits and a pair of errors on the Tars that lead to four Buccaneer runs.
In the second inning, the Bucs continued to scatter hits, as the first four hitters hit safely and tacked on three more runs to increase the lead to 7-4.
After the early scoring the Bucs were held in check for the rest of the game, but a late Tar’s rally fell short and Barry prevailed by a final score of 7-6.
Blackmon led the offensive charge going 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with two runs and an RBI, and his game-tying home run in game one.
Adrian English finished the second game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Brad McAllister picked up the win in game two allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.
The Bucs will now turn their attention onto Florida Memorial on Tuesday, before traveling to Boca Raton, Fla. for a three game series with rival Lynn.
