Golf Teams Compete in Regionals

Scott Smyers and Nancy Vergara will be shooting for a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Barry University men's and women's golf teams compete in the South Regionals beginning Sunday.

West Florida will host the nine-team, four-individual women's Division II South Regional at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Fla. Tee times begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the first round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.

The Buccaneers, ranked No. 6 in the nation, are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Championships. Paola Grande finished 12th at the conference tournament. Taylor Babcock, a Second Team All-SSC selection, was 17th at the league championships.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Championships May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville.

Ranked No. 1 in the Nike/Golf World Coaches poll, Barry's men's team will compete in the 20-team, eight-individual South/Southeast Super Regional hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne at Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C., Monday-Wednesday.

The Bucs are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Florida Blue SSC Championships. Simon Forsslund tied for 11th at the league championships. First Team All-SSC choice Daniel Stapff was 18th.

The top five teams and top two individuals not with a qualifying men's team advance to the NCAA Championships May 15-19 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
