Barry University women's tennis players Julie Stas and Akemi Maehama and women's golfer Taylor Babcock were named to the College Sports Information Director's of America Academic All-District At-Large women's team.
All three are now eligible for the All-American honor.
Stas, a senior from Brussels, Belgium who recently graduated, has a 3.62 in international studies. She went 15-3 this season as a singles player, attaining a No. 46 national ranking entering the NCAA Championships this week. She came up big in the national tournament, winning twice in the quarterfinals and once in the semifinals -- a win over the 17th-ranked player in the country.
As a doubles player, Stas racked up 23 wins, which ranks tied for third in school single-season history. She ranks fourth in school career singles winning percentage (.857) and doubles winning percentage (.795). Her 58 doubles victories rank ninth all-time.
Maehama, a sophomore from Miami, has a 3.84 in physical education. She recently won a Miami area physical education scholarship given to the only college women's athlete in the area. Maehama went 11-0 this year, which included a singles victory in the NCAA Championships first round. She also was 4-0 in doubles. Maehama is 19-0 in her career in singles and 8-0 in doubles.
Babcock, a junior from Lake Oswego, Ore., carries a 3.58 in sport management. This year, Babcock has eight top-10 finishes and two top-5. She was runner-up in the Barry Tri-Match in early April, and has the team's top scoring average. She has one round left to compete in the NCAA Championships Saturday at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course with the Bucs sitting in fourth place.
