Groetsch, Mokrzycki Start Strong for Men's Tennis

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University men's tennis players Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch both advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships Friday.

Mokrzycki, a senior from Hannover Germany, defeated Lynn's Max Kouyate, 6-1, 6-3 in the Flight A Round of 32. The top seed in the singles draw, Mokrzycki went on to beat Elio Latela, 7-5, 6-3, to move on to the quarterfinals against Saint Leo's Aloua Adjenak.

Groetsch outlasted Valdosta State's Mario Navarro, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in his opening match. A sophomore from Nuremberg, Germany, Groetsch outbattled West Florida's Tony Rajaobelina, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to advance to the quarters to meet Lynn's Willi Wolfer.

Groetsch and Mokrzycki defeated Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk of Valdosta State, 8-6, the Flight 1 doubles draw, following a first-round bye. Groetsch and Mokrzycki beat Latela and Bruno Savi, 8-5, in the pairs quarterfinals. That earned the Bucs a right to meet Wolfer and Vlad Cirla of Lynn in the semifinals.

At the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Fall Invitational in Fort Myers, Barry's Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi advanced to Saturday's singles quarterfinals, where they will meet each other.

Sielmann beat Juan Bolona of Central Florida, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 in the opening round Friday. A sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, then defeated FGCU's Gabe Echeverry, 6-4, 6-0, in the second round.

Lombardi, a freshman from Lausanne, Switzerland, rolled by FGCU's Lance Lvovsky, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round. He beat Florida Atlantic's Taylor Albrecht, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round to set up a match against his teammate.

Barry's junior Ollie Lemaitre of Noumea, New Caledonia, beat FAU's Jose Fantova, 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 in his first match, but fell to Central Florida's Pedro Wagner, 6-3, 6-0 in the following round.

Bucs junior Leo Vivas, a Caracas, Venezuela native, defeated Florida Atlantic's Chris Janssen, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. He lost to Victor Mauz of Miami, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Junior Romain Costamagna, a Cagnes-sur-mer, France product, dropped a three-set battle to FAU's Will Neiuner, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles draw in Fort Myers, Vivas and Eduardo Alfonzo, a freshman from Valencia, Carabobo, beat FGCU's Jordi Vives and Echeverry, 8-4 in Friday's first round. The Bucs duo will play FAU's pair of Fantova and Sean Bacha in Saturday's morning quarterfinals.

Lombardi and Lemaitre moved on to the quarters with an 8-6 win over Dylan Gunning and Dean Tsamas of Florida Gulf Coast. They will square off with Bolona and Matt Gladstone in the quarters.

Costamagna and Sielmann fell to Central Florida's Francesc Aulina and Wagner, 8-6, in their doubles match.
