Men's Basketball Meets Florida Southern in SSC Quarters

SSC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

 

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team opens the Sunshine State Conference Championships with a quarterfinal matchup 5 p.m. Friday against Florida Southern at Silver Spurs Arena.

The seventh-seeded Buccaneers (13-13) had won four of its past five, which included an overtime thriller over Rollins in neighboring Winter Park last week, before falling in the final regular season game. Florida Southern (21-5) shared the regular season conference title with Saint Leo, but received the No. 2 seed in the league tournament.

The Bucs lost to the Mocs, ranked 10th in NCAA Division II, twice this year. In 2009-10, Barry also fell to Florida Southern twice in the regular season before beating the Mocs in the SSC Tournament and in the NCAA Tournament a week later.

Barry has held its last four opponents to an average of 60.2 points per game. The Buccaneers limited six of their last seven opponents to 68 points or less. The Bucs are 5-3 when scoring 70 or more points and 6-4 when they score in the 60s.

Florida Southern's Seth Evans is averaging 15.7 points per game. Dominic Lane is averaging 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds. Kevin Capers is scoring 11.8 points per game, and Brett Bailey is averaging 10.6 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Senior guard Justin McCoy leads the Buccaneers in scoring at 14.2 points per game, having reached double figures in 23 of the 26 games. McCoy has started all 26 games, and is second on the team in assists with 70. Sophomore forward Magne Fivelstad is averaging 10.6 points and six rebounds while shooting 58.7 percent from the floor in 19 games.

Senior guard Chad Renfro is averaging 10 points and 4.2 rebounds. Senior point forward Filip Toric is averaging 9.5 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, and leads the team with 78 assists. Senior forward Aaron Martin is scoring 9.4 points per game, and leads the Bucs in three-point field goals with 44. His .352 percentage from beyond the arc is tops among the regulars.

Barry is 4-2 in overtime games, and has 12 wins in games decided by 10 points or less.

McCoy and Toric were named to the Breitbart Sports Top 2,000 Non-Division I players national report, both ranking in the top 800.
