Baseball Hits Grand Slam With Community Service
The Bucs participated in several events including Hand in Hand for Haiti and the annual Gobble Wobble 5K Run/Walk.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team continues to represent the Buccaneer program in a positive light as the group of young men embraced the Dominican tradition of service, one of the core values of Barry University, by participating in four community service events in the fall semester.

This fall the Bucs have participated in Hand in Hand for Haiti, Community Fest, Barry’s annual Gobble Wobble and the Pretty Muddy Run.

“I’m very proud of our players for their commitment to the community service portion of our mission,” said coach Pavao.

“What makes us most proud is the feedback that we get from the people hosting the events about our student athletes. When someone tells us that our kids worked hard and did their job with a smile on their face and brought smiles to others involved you know their doing things the right way.”

In October the Buccaneers volunteered at the “Hand in Hand for Haiti 2013” event that collected donations from pledges to continue funding education for students at the School in Saint-Marc, Haiti.

Hand in Hand for Haiti is a collective response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti following the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country on January 12. The project, which has generated extraordinary support, has built a world-class educational facility in an area of great need. The school, Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable opened on October 3, 2011.

The Buccaneers continued their support at Community Fest an event hosted by the University in accordance to Founders Week. The baseball program acknowledges that collaboration within the university is a great way to positively impact the community as they volunteered at the event while also participating in the spirit of Founders Week.

Additionally, head coach Marc Pavao and his squad volunteered at the annual Gobble Wobble 5K race by helping with event set-up, registration and handing out water while cheering and encouraging the participants.

The Gobble Wobble 5K Fitness Walk/Run is a student driven event designed and carried out by students in the Sport & Exercise Sciences Department at Barry University. All proceeds from this event are donated to FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth) a local non-for-profit organization, which promotes the consumption of nutritious foods and physical activity to youth.

In December, the Bucs completed their fourth community service event of the fall semester when they volunteered at the Pretty Muddy Run.

Pretty Muddy was started by a couple of businessmen who were inspired by their wives – their pretty cool wives. Watching their partners juggle kids, households, carpools and careers – while still having time for the occasional ladies’ night – got the men thinking:

These awesome women deserve more time for themselves. Time for balance and time to be themselves without their families. Because even the greatest mom, businesswoman or grandma sometimes needs time that is just her own.

Like those pretty cool wives, today’s women are looking for a way to get together and focus on friendship, fun and fitness – without their significant others, their kids and the stress of the daily grind.

With the help of their wives and an incredible team of creative and motivated people, the two businessmen created an inaugural series of events called Pretty Muddy.

More than a mud run, it’s an exciting women-only event where you can let your hair down and have fun! And that’s pretty awesome.

The Buccaneers open the 2014 season on Feb. 1st when they host Shorter University at Feinbloom field.
