Barry University Holds Early Virtual Graduation for Nurse Anesthetists

(MIAMI, FL) Barry University today hosted a virtual degree conferral for 59 Nurse Anesthesiology students graduating early in light of the global pandemic. This is the second College of Nursing and Health Sciences program for which the University has expedited graduation in order to get qualified, well-educated health care professionals into the fight against coronavirus without delay.

The event included a blessing from Rev. Carl Cramer, Associate Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences as well as addresses from Dr. John McFadden, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Dr. Rebecca Lee, Program Director. Barry University President, Dr. Mike Allen, conferred degrees upon the graduates. The event concluded with a toast to the nation’s newest health care workers led by Barry University Provost, Dr. John Murray.

Nurse Anesthetists are critical health care professionals with skills to work in operating rooms and intensive care units, providing intubations, managing ventilators, and stabilizing COVID-19 patients in respiratory distress.

Barry University’s 17 Cardiovascular Perfusionists also graduated early, on April 11, with some already out on the frontlines. These vital specialists work in operating rooms and critical care units with heart and lung machines and other mechanical support machines. The scope of their practice includes long-term support for respiratory and cardiac failure.

University administration plans to hold in-person commencement ceremonies for all programs when the situation allows.
