Barry University Graduate Awarded Prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

(MIAMI, FL) Barry University alum Qiwen Su, Class of 2017, was awarded the 2020 National Science Foundation Graduate research fellowship.

Upon graduation from Barry in 2017 with BS in chemistry, specialization in biochemistry and minor in biology, Ms. Su conducted two research assistantships, one at Argonne National Lab and another at Pacific Northwest National Lab. Currently, she is enrolled in the PhD program in chemistry at Boston College where she develops and executes experiments aimed at evolving RNA aptamers in bacterial cells using CRISPR-dCas9.

Besides conducting research, she is involved in leading efforts to increase public scientific literacy in genome sciences and diversifying the scientific workforce. While at Barry, she conducted research with Dr. Tamara Hamilton and Dr. John Boulos and impressively, co-authored a publication in each research area. Additionally, she co-authored another manuscript with researchers at Pacific Northwest National Lab.

For her outstanding leadership, she was awarded Dr. George J. Wanko Award for Outstanding Junior, the National Engaged Leader Award, the National Excellence in Leadership Award and President’s Award for Outstanding Senior while at Barry.

The graduate research fellowship provides financial support for three years within a five-year fellowship period or until Ms. Su graduates.
