Barry student Connor Randel named Newman Fellow by Campus Compact

MIAMI, Fla. -- Barry University senior Connor Randel has been named a 2015 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. Randel joins more than 200 students from 36 states and the District of Columbia in earning the community engagement award.

The Newman Civic Fellow award is granted annually to promising student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in their community. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is generously sponsored by the KPMG Foundation.  Through service, research, and advocacy, these Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. The 2015 Newman Civic Fellows were nominated directly by college and university presidents.

Randel, a finance and accounting double major, has promoted financial literacy through Barry's Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). For the past two years, he has supervised the SMIF-based financial literacy program at William H. Turner Technical Arts High School. The program forms the service-learning component of a course designed to teach personal finance and investing. With Randel’s assistance, more than 120 high-school students have benefited from the program.

In addition, Randel has assisted in planning a social entrepreneurship project under the guidance of the Community Learning Partnership (CLP) of Greater Miami Shores. He also has participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Barry, helping local community members to prepare their tax returns. Randel is a member of the prestigious Stamps Leadership Scholarship Program. Stamps Scholarships are awarded nationwide to driven and talented students with proven leadership skills.

Randel is also a member of the Barry Buccaneer men’s soccer team. In two seasons, he has scored 18 goals and 12 assists on the pitch. In 2013, Randel served as president of Barry’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He is a two-time member of the President’s List with a 4.0 GPA.
