Children at Work (April 28, 2005)
April 28th was a day of sharing power and possibility at Barry University. Thirty seven children and teens ages 8-14 years old participated in the first annual participation in the Ms. Foundation’s Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. The day was full of many educational, motivational, and enjoyable activities for the students. Students were able to interact with Barry University’s Student government leaders, participate in a campus tour, and attend presentations at many of Barry’s renowned departments. DoIT gave students the opportunity to learn about television production, graphic design, video conferencing and more. Fine Arts allowed students to experience the life of a photographer by observing the photo lab and darkroom. Through Barry’s Fine Arts Department, students were also able to take a look at the Barry theatre and pottery studio. Later in the afternoon, the students visited the Marine Biology Lab and viewed a Dolphin Rescue presentation. Physical activity time was also offered for the students though Barry’s School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences. After an afternoon snack, the students had the chance to watch a performance by the Barry University step team. After the performance, the students took instructional lessons from the step team and did a performance of their own. The day ended with the student’s job shadowing their parents. Overall, the event was a huge success. Power and possibility were shared with the students and the goals of the Ms. Foundation, creators of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day were achieved: “Sharing Power and Possibility represents our nation’s daughters and sons working together to achieve success.”
A huge thank you goes out to all of those who volunteered for this day. Without your help, hard work, and assistance, this event would not have been possible.
