Marine Animal Rescue Society (MARS) Basic Rehab Training:
May 2005

Pioneer members of the Barry-MARS response team

Pioneer members of the Barry-MARS response team – Beth Williams, Shannon Schmitt, Marsha Thompson and Helena Giannini – just a few of many at Barry and in South Florida involved with MARS and the entire rehab effort.

The next training session will be in May 2005; the location and date will be determined and announced ASAP.

Anyone interested in becoming a trained MARS volunteer or getting a refresher course needs to attend this session. Contact Barry-NOAA Program coordinator Helena Giannini at barry-noaa@mail.barry.edu to RSVP -- space is limited!

Dolphin Necropsy with the Marine Animal Rescue Society:
March 11, 2005

Marsha Thompson, Shannon Schmitt, and Helena Giannini

Barry Bucs Marsha Thompson, Shannon Schmitt, and Helena Giannini perform a necropsy on a male dolphin from the Marathon stranding – supervised by Dr. Ruth Ewing.

The dolphin necropsy was performed at NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center by Dr. Ruth Ewing and many MARS volunteers. Barry students Marsha Thompson and Shannon Schmitt and Barry-NOAA Program Coordinator Helen Giannini, all trained MARS volunteers, assisted in the necropsy.

Two male rough-toothed males were transported from Marathon to Virginia Key, where the necropsies were performed. Necropsies are performed in the hopes of ascertaining why the dolphins died, and may give some clues as to why they stranded.

Dolphin Rehab with the Marine Animal Rescue Society:
March 2005

Beth Williams

Beth Williams walks Nia, the rough tooth dolphin, in the frigid pool at the MARS rehab site in Virginia Key.

On March 3rd, 2005, there was a mass stranding off Marathon, Florida -- 80 rough-toothed dolphins beach themselves. Barry students and staff who are also trained MARS volunteers aided in rehab of dolphins in Virginia Key.

Marine Animal Rescue Society (MARS) Basic Rehab Training:
January 24, 2005

stretcher

Barry Bucs Helena Giannini, Elizabeth Williams, Marsha Thompson and Esther Young learn to stretcher a dolphin – played by Shannon Schmitt – supervised by MARS stranding coordinator Pamela Sweeney.

The Marine Animal Rescue Society (MARS) works to rescue, rehabilitate, research, and educate the public about stranded marine mammals.

Barry University students and staff attended this training session, held at the UM campus, to learn the basics of marine mammal rescue and rehab.

Present were Barry-NOAA Program student Marsha Thompson, Program Coordinator Helena Giannini, SNHS bio majors Shannon Schmitt and Esther Young, and Arts and Sciences student Beth Williams.

Other Barry students were present, and hopefully all Barry community members will come together to form the Barry-MARS response network.
